SRI LANKA - Fifty Cents
A definitive decimal currency Fifty cent copper plated Steel coin with a milled edge, first issued 2005 December 14th. It was to circulate along side the older Cupro-Nickel coin and Nickel Plated Steel coin which remained legal tender.
Obverse : The Armorial Ensign of Sri Lanka
Reverse : The large numeral 50 with value FIFTY CENTS in Sinhala, Tamil and English below and year of issue at the bottom within a circle of the traditional Sinhala Liyavela art with Sri Lanka in Sinhala on top.
The same diameter but 30% thinner and 23% lighter than the older 25
cents which is 3.24 grams. Since coins appear to get sorted by
diameter, I suspect that this 50 cent coin will mix in with the older
25 cent coins if it circulates
sufficiently to become black by corrosion or dirt.
